Module 4
Inventory & Supply Chain Management
Hold the right stock, in the right place, at the right cost.
Our Perspective
For a product business, inventory is where cash goes to hide. Carry too much and your working capital is sitting on a shelf; carry too little and you hand the sale to whoever did have it in stock. The uncomfortable truth is that most businesses are doing both at once — overstocked on the slow lines, short on the fast ones — because their stock figures are really a best guess. Business Central replaces the guess with a live, costed, traceable view across every location, so you can release tied-up cash without ever risking the order you can't afford to miss.
Inventory & Supply Chain Management tracks every item across every location, with the costing, planning and traceability needed to keep stock accurate and capital efficient. It connects what you sell, what you buy and what you make, so availability is always a real number rather than an educated guess. It's built for distributors, wholesalers, retailers and product businesses where too much stock ties up cash and too little loses the sale.
What you can do
- See all your stock: Track quantities, values and movements across multiple warehouses, locations and bins in real time, with a live view of what's available to promise.
- Stay traceable: Trace items by lot or serial number from receipt through to delivery, ready for recalls, warranty claims, expiry control and compliance.
- Plan ahead: Plan supply automatically with reorder points, safety stock, minimum and maximum levels and demand-driven replenishment that reads real orders.
- Cost accurately: Choose the costing method — FIFO, average, standard, specific and more — that reflects how your business actually values goods, and keep margins honest.
Inside Business Central
The Item Card carries categories, attributes, variants, multiple units of measure, costing method and reordering policy. Locations, Transfer Orders and in-transit handling move stock between sites; Item Tracking manages lot and serial numbers with expiry dates; and Item Charges keep landed cost accurate. Replenishment runs through the Planning Worksheet (MPS and MRP) using reorder point, fixed reorder quantity, maximum and lot-for-lot policies. Assembly Orders and Assembly BOMs handle kitting and light manufacturing without the full Manufacturing module. Physical Inventory Journals, cycle counting and item reclassification keep counts honest, and Item Availability by location, period, BOM and event shows exactly what's free to sell.
The business impact
- Reduce excess and obsolete inventory and free up working capital without risking stockouts on the lines that matter.
- Gain a single, accurate view of availability across every warehouse, location and sales channel.
- Respond to demand changes faster with planning that recalculates as orders, receipts and production post.
- Cut write-offs, shrinkage and emergency freight with tighter tracking and a full movement history behind every item.
Works with
Inventory is the backbone that the other modules rely on — Sales, Purchasing, Warehouse and Manufacturing all read and write to the same item records, so there is never a second version of the truth. Surface stock turn, ageing and availability in Power BI, and extend reach with a dedicated supply-chain or logistics add-on, or an e-commerce connector so online availability always reflects real, current inventory.
DIY-ERP Implementation
Item setup, costing methods, locations, tracking and planning policies are built inside Business Central with the DIY-ERP toolkit, with your Super User trained on the decisions that matter as they're made. Scope is self-prescribed up front, so the price and go-live date are fixed and guaranteed. You keep the knowledge in-house, ready to adapt the setup yourself as your range and locations grow.
Next step: Share your item count and locations, and we'll show you how Business Central keeps availability and costing accurate as you scale — without adding headcount.
